This great festival has been designed to suit all levels of walkers from casual low level walks to the more experienced! Each day there is a choice of at least 3 walks from Strenuous to low level plus an archaeology fieldtrip on the Sunday. This year the programme includes: Mweelrea, Ben Gorm, Derryclare Horseshoe, 12 Bens, Connemara National Park & The Killary Famine Trail.

Each walk is guided by qualified, experienced guides and covered by public insurance. Another unique element of the festival is that the local farmers get involved with guiding the walks and share their vast knowledge, folklore and history of the land.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Friday 28th April

Arrival to Leenane Village

Arrive to Leenane (directly or get picked up from Maam Cross bus stop by us) and settle to your accommodation.
Explore the surrounds and the lovely village of Leenane.
Enjoy a 3/4 course dinner at your accommodation before heading to the Walking Festival opening at 8 pm in Leenane Hotel with a free talk from Miko Keane and a showing of the award winning video from Leenane school "When Cropfields Cry".


 

Day 2 - Saturday 29th April

Your first guided walk

After a delicious breakfast, you will be able to check in for your walk from 8 am at Leenane Community Centre (a short walk from your accommodation).
Your packed lunch will be available to collect from the village before you head for your walk.
Here are the choices of walk for today:

Walk A: 12 Bens  

A great day’s walking in prospect, our walk will take in 3 of the 12 Ben’s and will include the highest peak in the range  Binn Bhán at 729m The walk begins in  Gleninagh  and winds its way up the valley to the col at Maumina before ascending the scree slopes to Binn Bhán. From there the walk proceeds through Binn Fhaoigh and onwards to Binn Bhreac before our final descent to the farm at Kylemore.
 
Walk Details: Distance 14k, Total Ascent  1050m, Time 6 – 7 hours Grade: Strenuous.
 
Walk B: Derryclare Horseshoe  

Beginning in the Inagh Valley our walks starts on a track through the woods before we start our descent of Binn Derryclare. From the summit at 673m the views over South Connemara are a sight to behold.  We then turn North West to the peak at Bencorr at 711m. We descend the long ridge from Bencorr to the valley floor and make our way back into the woods and return to our waiting transport.
 
Walk Details: Distance 13K, Total ascent 820m, Time 5 hours. Grade: Moderate / Hard   

Walk C: Low Level - Killary Harbour Famine track

Beginning in Rosroe this 7k walk along the famine road that was built by the starving Irish peasants during the Great Famine of 1845 – 1849. The walk passes through the now deserted village of Foher where the ruins of several houses can be seen.
 
Walk Details: Distance 8k, Ascent 50m, Time 3 hours. Grade: Easy – suitable for all. The track can be wet and boggy in places.

You will finish your walk around 4-5 pm and arrive down to tea/coffee/scones in the village.

Your 3/4 course dinner is also included tonight at your accommodation and more entrainement will be waiting for you in the pubs. A Table quiz will be running in one of the pub to fundraise the local crèche, great craic!

 

Day 3 - Sunday 30th April

Your second guided walk

After another delicious breakfast, you will again check in for your walk from 8 am at Leenane Community Centre.
Your packed lunch will be available to collect from the village before you head for your walk.

Here are the choices of walk for today:

Walk A: Mweelrea 

Mweelrea is the highest mountain in Connaught with dramatic sea, island & upland views on every side. This festival walk will set out from the southern end of Doolough (north of Bald's Bridge in the Delphi Valley), follows the airy cliff- edge to Ben Bury & then on to the 814m high summit before dropping steeply down to the Killary shore for transport back to Leenane by Rib & bus
 
Walk Details: Time 7hrs Grade: Strenuous
 
Walk B: Ben Gorm

The walk starts on the Southern slopes of the mountain where we begin our trek to the summit. At 700m the views over Killary Fiord and the offshore Islands are fabulous. We descend to a bog track in the Doolough Valley and make our way back to our starting point.
 
Walk Details:  Distance 11k, Ascent 700m, Time 4:5 hours. Grade: Moderate / Hard
 
Walk C: Low level - Connemara National Park.

Guided walk in Connemara National Park. Details to follow

You will finish your walk around 4-5 pm and arrive down to tea/coffee/scones in the village.

Your 3/4 course dinner is also included tonight at your accommodation and to finish that lovely weekend with the famous Céile at the Leenane Hotel!

If your tour start date is within 30 days of booking, the full, non-refundable payment is required upon booking.
