Overview

This is a quick, easy weekend getaway within one hours drive of Galway City. Enjoy a breath of fresh air while based in the stunning setting Leenane village, overlooking Killary Harbour with Mweelrea mountain providing a majestic backdrop. Reachable by bus from Galway City or Westport, you will spend a weekend getting out and about in one of Ireland’s most beautiful areas.

Discover the unique beauty of the famine track along Killary Harbour, visit the chapel of Maumean with its rich history as a pilgrim’s waypoint and explore one of the most beautiful parts of the Western Way near Ashleigh Falls. Spend your evenings in the picturesque village of Leenane and enjoy the lively craic over a guinness or two in the local pubs!

You can leave all preparation to us as we provide route notes and maps; arrange all transfers to and from walks so you are free to enjoy your weekend without a care in the world.

Duration:		3 Days (2 nights) or 4 days (3 nights)
Tour Dates 2013:		Any dates from April to October
Level:		Moderate walking, with some hill on day 3 and road walking day 2.
Equipment:		You are provided with route notes and maps, but correct rain proof gear and walking boots are essential to bring with you.
Accommodation:		Depending on the option: 3* Hotels, B&Bs & Guesthouse or Hostels.
Meals:		2 / 3 Irish breakfasts (except for the hostel option)
Transfers:		Airport transfers not included. (Knock – Leenane Taxi is approx €200 return for up to 4 people). Transfers to and from walks are included.

Itinerary

DAY 1

Arrive into Knock Airport (or any other location). Transfer to first night in Leenane village, tucked into the foot of the mountains and overlooking Killary Fjord, Ireland's only fjord. A Connemara Adventure Tours representative will meet you to go through you itinerary and deliver your maps & route notes. A choice of three restaurants and two pubs offers plenty to occupy you for the evening.

DAY 2
Your walk starts at the mouth of Killary Harbour and follows the old famine track. This is a wild and beautiful path, built during the potato famine along the side of the harbour, now a long obsolete road with magnificent views of Mweelrea mountain (the highest in Connaught) and the Maam Turk Mountains. The path joins up with the Western Way walking trail which brings you back into the village and a well deserved pint of Guiness!
Distance: 15 kms or longer depending on the route chosen. A second overnight in Leenane.

DAY 3
Today, depending on your return flight, you have options! You can relax, read the Sunday papers over a long coffee in the pub and take a short walk out from the village or you can take 2 hour, 10km route along the shores of the famous salmon river, the Erriff to Ashleigh Falls, You will meander through spectacular scenery with mountains on either side of the river. The peaceful silence of these valleys is often only broken by the sheep wandering along the fields beside you! Pack up & depart for Knock airport.

Option of extra day:
Mamean walk – This walk takes you through farming countyside to the old mountain track over Mamean (a place of pilgrimage) which gives way to the rugged terrain of the Maam Turk Range and the Pass of the Birds. Once over the pass, the dramatic vista of the 12 Ben mountain range comes into view with Lough Inagh at their feet. Following the Western Way back into Leenane Village you pass through forest and open moorland with only yourselves for company.

All prices are in EURO, and based on per person sharing. Per person sharing means two people in one room. Single Room supplement is applied when people require a room for themselves as part of a booking of two or more. Bookings are based on a minimum of two people booking.
