Walking Holidays in Kerry, Ireland

The Iveragh peninsula, known world wide as the Ring of Kerry is the base for this self-guided walking package. You walk for 7 days following the waymarked Kerry Way, a low-level walking route, using the old droving paths and coach roads to create a journey through history and folklore. For most of the walk you follow the coastline with its bays and inlets and beautiful sandy beaches, but you also enjoy spectacular views from the mountain passes of the surrounding land, seas, and islands out in the Atlantic Ocean. You will also pass through Killarney National Park, with some of Ireland’s finest oak wood. And all along the way you will come past archaeological remains telling you the story of the people who lived in the Kingdom of Kerry through the centuries. You will stay in B&Bs along the route. All rooms are en-suite, meals are excellent, and the scenery could not be better. Your luggage will be transferred and you will be brought to and from Killarney at the start and finish of your tour. You will walk along tracks, with the help of maps supplied and walk description.

DAY 1 - Arrival
Arrive in Killarney – the popular town surrounded by three magnificent lakes in the heart of Kerry. On arrival to your first guesthouse, your hostess will give you your full detailed information pack. She will also be able to suggest some of the many local restaurants or pubs for food and possibly music.

DAY 2 - Killarney to Kenmare
Distance: 22km/13.5miles Ascent: 400m/1,200ft mountain tracks andgreen roads.
You will be transferred/driven to the start of your walk – about 5km outside Killarney. From here you walk across Killarney National Park and Esknamucky Glen to the heritage town of Kenmare. This is a glorious walk, giving you an opportunity to see some of Ireland’s native Red Deer as you walk through the National Park.

DAY 3 - Kenmare to Sneem
Distance: 22km/13.5miles Ascent: 300m/900ft forest tracks, mountain tracks, country lanes and some road walking Once again you are driven a short distance from the town of Kenmare, to start walking in the little village of Templemoe. From here you walk to the award winning village of Sneem. This walk takes you along the banks of the Kenmare River, with views across the Beara Peninsula and the Caha Mountains.

DAY 4 - Sneem to Caherdaniel
Distance: 19km/12miles Ascent: 400m/1200ft country lanes, grass tracks, rocky mountains and some road walking Continue walking from the village of Sneem, following an old “butter-road” to the little village of Caherdaniel, once home to Daniel O’Connell, the Liberator.

DAY 5 - Caherdaniel to Waterville
Distance: 16km/10miles Ascent: 350m/1050ft rocky and grassy tracks, mountain tracks and bogland and some road walking.
Continuing from the village of Caherdaniel, you walk around and above the coast to follow over to the town of Waterville. Glorious coastal views out towards the Skellig Islands and Ballinskelligs Bay.

DAY 6 - Waterville to Caherciveen
Distance: 24km/15miles Ascent: 400m/1200ft mountain tracks, gravel tracks and some road walking From Waterville you will once again be driven a short distance to the starting point of today’s walk at Mastergeehy. From here you will be walking to the town of Caherciveen. This walk takes you across the tip of the peninsula with views north over the Dingle Peninsula and south to Kenmare Bay.

DAY 7 - Caherciveen to Glenbeigh
Distance: 24km/15miles Ascent: 350m/1050ft mountain tracks, gravel tracks and some road walking Your final walk takes you from the town of Caherciveen along the northern shores of the peninsula to the little town of Glenbeigh. This road follows an old 17th century “stage coach” route and gives spectacular views across to the Dingle Peninsula. You will pass through old deserted villages, which were once busy centres of activity, trading with passengers on the old Stage Coaches.

DAY 8 - Depart
After breakfast depart to bus back to Killarney. Leaves at 8.45 arrives Killarney 09.50 From Killarney, connections by bus and train are frequent to Cork, Limerick, Shannon or Dublin.
