In the bleak midwinter…there’s nothing quite like sitting beside the fireplace in a traditional pub, pint (or cup of tea, whatever you’re having) in hand! We’ve rounded up five of our favourite fireplaces in Connemara pubs to get cosy beside this winter.

Keane’s, Maam

Keane’s Maam Fireplace

One of the oldest licensed premises in Ireland, Keane’s was built in 1820 by Alexander Nimmo as his main residence while he designed the roads and bridges of Connemara. The place is steeped in history, and if the walls could talk we’re sure they’d have plenty of tales, including stories from the wrap party of ‘The Quiet Man’ with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara, which was held there in 1952. Relax in their comfy leather armchairs by the open fire, and don’t forget to order one of their tasty ham and cheese toasties!

Hamilton’s Bar, Leenane

If you’re after a tasty meal and a decent pint of Guinness served with a smile then family-run Hamilton’s Bar and Restaurant in Leenane village is the place to go. Sit by the range, get cosy and enjoy memorabilia from ‘The Field’ which decorates the walls. There’s also a grocery store attached so you’re covered if you need to get the messages.

Paddy Coyne’s Pub, Tullycross

This lovely traditional pub in Tullycross dates back to 1811 and has been in the Coyne family for generations. Coyne’s is another pub full of trinkets and memorabilia which give a nod to its fascinating history – from being a ticket agent for the White Star Line to being a filming location for the RTÉ series ‘Single-Handed’. If you’re feeling very brave and want to really appreciate the fire, you can go for a dip at Renvyle beach just down the road first.

MC McGrath’s Bar, Clifden

If it’s traditional music you’re after then McGrath’s Bar, one of Clifden’s oldest family-owned bars, is the place for you. You’ll be greeted by a lively atmosphere, plenty of local characters, and not one, but two, open fires! Grab a stool, settle in with a creamy pint or cocktail, and let the tunes, the chatter, and the crackle of the hearth keep you toasty on a winter evening.

Cloverfox, Letterfrack

Cloverfox Letterfrack Fireplace

If it’s excellent local seafood you want then Cloverfox in Letterfrack is the spot to bookmark. Known for its relaxed, friendly vibe, this charming pub also boasts a welcoming wood-burning stove that becomes the heart of the room on cold winter days. After a day exploring Connemara National Park just down the road, there’s nothing better than warming up by the fire with a bowl of chowder, a pint in hand, and the gentle hum of conversation all around.
