ITINERARY

For those with a car, drive to Connemara. For those without a car, take the bus from Dublin to Galway (tickets not included in price) and a taxi will pick you up in Galway and drive you to Connemara. You will spend the night on the beautiful Renvyle peninsula. Dinner included.

You will be transferred to the starting point of today’s walk which follows an ancient pilgrim’s path to Maumean (translated from Gaelic as the ‘pass of the birds’). The summit of Maumean at a height of 320m is marked by a small chapel and other religious features associated with Ireland’s patron saint, Patrick. There is much ritual and myth attached to this site and it will give you a fascinating insight into religious practice in Ireland over the past few centuries and before. You will then follow the Western Way, a marked walking trail, to the tranquillity of the Inagh Valley where your taxi will pick you up and drive you back to Renvyle. Dinner and night in Renvyle.

Distance:

16km

Today, you will have a choice of 2 different hikes:

- For those of you who feel like going up a mountain, you will be transferres to Aasleigh Falls where you will go up Ben Gorm (700m high). You will have stunning views over the Killary Fjord on one side, the Doo Lough and Delphi Valley in front of you and the Eriff valley on the other side.

- For those who'd like to take it easier, you will be transferres to Rosroe where you will walk alon the Famine trail. You will walk all the way to Leenane following the Western Way after you leave the Famine Trail. You will be rewarded by stunning views over the Killary Fjord all along.

You can all meet in Leenane at the end of your hike, and enjoy a well deserved drink in one of the village's pubs. Your taxi will then drive you back to Renvyle for your last night on the peninsula.

Distance:

Ben Gorm: 10km, 700m elevation - Famine Trail: 15km, 245m elevation

You will be brought to the start if your hike today, Tully Mountain. Please note that there are very limited spaces for parking, so no more than 3 cars can park there. you will be rewarded by stunning views over Mweelrea, the islands of Inishbofin and Inishturk and the 12 Bens. You will be brought to Clifden tonight. Dinner and night in Clifden.

Distance:

5km - 350m elevation

Rest Day. You will have the choice between relaxing in and around Clifden, or go to Ballyconneely to enjoy some time at the beach. Kylemore Abbey is also an option, but please note that we will only have 1 driver at your disposal so it might be best if you split the group in 2, and those with a car go together somewhere, and the taxi driver will drive the remaining people somewhere else (if the group doesn’t want to do the same thing of course). Dinner at your own expenses tonight. Night in Clifden.

Today you will be transferred to the fishing village of Cleggan where you will take the ferry to Inishbofin island. Bofin or 'Inis Bo Finne' (Island of the White Cow) lies seven miles off Connemara’s coast in the Atlantic Ocean. It is estimated that it was inhabited as far back as 8000 – 4000 B.C. As you sail around the tower and signal light into the harbour, you will come upon a sixteenth century ruined barracks. This was used as a prison for Catholic priests from all over Ireland after the English Statute of 1585 declared them guilty of high treason. There are several looped walks around the island which you are free to explore, after which you might find yourself drawn into a cosy pub by the traditional music you can hear inside!

You will take the ferry back at 5pm and you will be brought to Clifden. Dinner at your own expenses tonight. Night in Clifden.

Distance:

Choice of walks between 6 and 15 kms, elevation from 60 to 180m, from 1 to 5 hours walking

Today, you will climb Errisberg mountain in Roundstone. You will go up and down (not a loop) and the views over Dogs Bay and Roundstone are stunning. For those of you who would like to take it easy, you will have the option to walk along Dog’s Bay and Gurteen Bay. You will be brought back to Clifden tonight for your last night in Connemara. Dinner and night in Clifden.

Distance:

Errisberg: 6km, 300m elevation

Departure after breakfast. For those without a car, you will take the bus back from Clifden to Galway (not included, www.citylink.ie) and then you will take another bus from Galway to Dublin airport for your onwards journey.
