TOUR HIGHLIGHTS

  • Savour the best natural flavours from Connemara’s hundreds of lakes, rivers and mountainous lands - fresh lobsters, lamb, mussels, clams, scallops, venison, salmon and trout, quail and guinea fowl.
  • Dine in award-winning restaurants, hand-picked for their passionate chefs who create innovative menus with the freshest, locally-sourced produce.
  • Uncover the true magic of Ireland, found not only in the breathtaking scenery, but also in the unique warmth of the Irish people. On this biking trip in Ireland you will have the chance to experience both.
  • Stay in two of Ireland’s world-class castle hotels and have your every wish indulged by their impeccable service.

Chloe’s favourite Irish food:

Coming from France I have high standards! However the locally sourced food of Connemara is superb. My favourite is probably the lamb. The fresh air, clean water and freedom these animals enjoy must add to the incredible flavour.

ITINERARY

map

You will be collected from Galway, Westport or Knock Airport and brought to your accommodation at Lough Inagh, a wonderfully secluded valley in the Connemara mountains. Your meal tonight will be in Lough Inagh Lodge, a rebuilt fishing lodge perched on the shores of a freshwater lough. Seafood and game are a speciality in the restaurant with delicious home-baked bread to accompany your meal. Conor or Gabriel will meet with you on the day of arrival to answer any questions you may have about your tour. Your bicycles, equipment, route notes and maps will be waiting for you at your accommodation on arrival, ensuring you are ready to start your bike holiday in Ireland.

Today your cycle route takes you along the coast, passing the pristine white sands of Glassilaun & Lettergesh beaches where the contrast with the green ocean waters and the rocky hillsides creates a vivid palette. Your destination is the Renvyle Peninsula, an area which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean and is peppered with archaeological sites, historical ruins and hidden beaches and coves. You will be spending two nights in Renvyle and will have the pleasure of dining each night in the multi-award-winning restaurant in the historic Renvyle House Hotel. Situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the hotel is located on 150 acres, which include a private lake, a 9-hole golf course, a beach, woodlands, gardens and numerous activities on site.

Distance:

30 km

Today you will explore the Renvyle Peninsula, passing through Tullycross with its row of traditional thatched cottages and following the road to Letterfrack. Letterfrack village is home to Connemara National Park, which is a wonderful source of information on the flora and fauna of this preserved landscape and also offers excellent marked trail walks. You will visit the world famous Kylemore Abbey, a gothic lakeside castle lodged at the foot of a steep hill. It is the site of one of Ireland's finest award-winning gardens, the six-acre Victorian walled garden created by Mitchell Henry in tandem with the building of Kylemore Castle in 1867. You will return to Renvyle along leafy back roads to enjoy another evening of fine dining in Renvyle House Hotel.

Distance:

10 - 35 km

Today you cycle to Clifden, a colourful town on the Connemara coast, often called the 'Capital of Connemara'. There are various route options available, the shortest being 25km, with the longest (passing through Cleggan and Aughrisbeg) over 50km. Do not miss the cycle along the Sky Road, offering you panoramic views over the Atlantic and the islands lying just offshore. We recommend that you stop for an independent lunch in the Bridgestone-awarded Steam Café, offering delicious organic homegrown salads, homemade soups and desserts. You will have a chance to explore the town & settle into your accommodation before dining at Mitchell’s Restaurant in Clifden this evening.

Distance:

45 km

Your cycle today begins along the lake-strewn bog road to Ballyconneely. Here you can visit the acclaimed Connemara Smokehouse, which specialises in wild and organic salmon, smoked and marinated with traditional methods. Owner Gordon Roberts is one of Rick Stein’s food heroes and his smoked tuna appears in Stein’s restaurant. Afterwards you will continue your journey to Roundstone, a scenic fishing village in South Connemara, made famous through the work of many well-known painters. They have been attracted here by its picturesque harbour and wonderful outlook across the Atlantic to the jagged peaks of the Twelve Bens mountain range. This evening you will be staying in Ballynahinch Castle, dining at its renowned Owenmore restaurant.

Distance:

33 km

Your target today is the village of Cong. You will cycle over the Maam Valley mountain pass where the surrounding steep-sided hills and green valleys seem endless in every direction. The road brings you along the shores of Lough Corrib, where the ruins of a castle are still visible on one of the islands in the lake. Passing through the villages of Cornamona and Clonbur you will then arrive in Cong, where the John Ford film The Quiet Man was shot in 1952. Cong also boasts several notable historical sites including an inscribed stone cross (fourteenth century) and the ruins of Ashford Abbey, founded in 1128. Tonight, you stay and dine in Ashford Castle, one of Ireland's finest hotels, and former residence of the Guinness family.

Distance:

52 km

Breakfast and departure by taxi back to Galway, Westport or Knock Airport, after what we promise will be a memorable biking trip in Ireland.
