Distance:

Welcome to Connemara! Failte go Conamara! This morning’s hike follows the Famine Trail along the edge of Killary Fjord which was built as a relief project during the Great Famine of the 1840s. The trail is approximately 10km (6 miles) from Rosroe to Killary and should take 2 to 3 hours to walk on a mix of small roads, rocky trails, and boggy tracks. With spectacular views over the fjord and surrounding coastline and majestic mountains rising either side, this is a true escape.

Towards the end of the trail, you’ll stop to visit Tom’s Sheep Farm, a traditional mountain farm. Tom’s family have farmed this land at the very edge of the fjord for generations. You'll be treated to an immersive experience featuring sheepdog demonstrations and sheep shearing and might even get to try your hand at some of these traditional skills.

A gourmet packed lunch from the multi-award-winning Misunderstood Heron is included in your Day Tour adventure. Stop along the trail at a scenic spot of your choice and enjoy a delicious meal made from the finest locally sourced produce.

After your hike, your path leads back to Killary Aerial Park, where an exhilarating adventure awaits. Woven through the treetops of mature woodlands at the edge of the fjord, this high-rise experience features 10 thrilling zip lines and 32 challenging elements across four distinct routes. An afternoon of excitement and a whole lot of 'craic' is guaranteed.

Once you’re back on dry land, it’s the end of your adventure and time for your private transfer back to Galway. Slan go foil! – we’ll see you again soon.

Our favourite on this tour

Following the contours of the Killary Fjord, passing cottages and potato fields called 'lazy beds' abandoned in the Great Famine, the Famine Trail is one of the few paths along the edge of Killary Harbour. As you hike along the path through abandoned villages, you can’t help but sense the poignant history and lives of all those who have walked this way before you.

Our Reviews

See what our guests have to say about travelling in Ireland with Connemara Adventure Tours.

Frank

“What a wonderful time we had! Honestly, I went in with low expectations. Friends and family who had traveled to Ireland before told me the food was poor, the accommodations were just “okay,” and that most of the experience centered around bars and castles. One even said, “You don’t go to Ireland for the scenery, you go for the pubs.”
Well, that was not my experience at all. Connemara Adventure Tours provided us with a trip to remember!”

“My husband and I (both active people in early 60’s) just completed a custom cycling tour through Connemara Adventure Tours and it was the trip of a lifetime. Roxane and Irmi worked with us to make a route and itinerary that perfectly suited our needs and created a magical trip that we will always remember.”

“Excellent experience with Connemara Adventure. We spent a week cycling in Connemara, almost always by the sea. The stages are well planned, not too far from each other. The accommodations are very good, always a warm welcome. The logistics were top notch. And we had the opportunity to meet two of the agency members who are very friendly. In short, we absolutely recommend it, you will not be disappointed.”

“The landscapes are simply sublime: shimmering lakes, rolling hills, peaceful little roads where only the sound of tires and wind accompanies the ride. We let ourselves be lulled by the gentle rhythm of the bike, between a moment of serenity and a breath of fresh air.
A big thank you to the entire team for these moments of relaxation, nature, and discovery. We leave feeling rested... and already a little nostalgic.”

“An exceptionally energetic, dedicated, and competent tour operator. Based directly in Connemara, with multilingual staff. Always available, helpful, and full of great ideas when it comes to discovering the country and its people off the beaten track. My personal highlight was the visit to the Lough Mask distillery. I will definitely use this operator again on my next visit to Ireland.”

“We had a wonderful time. The nature and many encounters were deeply touching, at least for us. In many places, you can feel the connection between people and nature. The accommodations were lovingly selected, and the rooms were comfortable with fantastic beds. The program was wonderfully varied. If you're looking for solitude, you can still find it here. We'll definitely be back. Thank you, Irmi.”
